HERRIN – Two juveniles were taken into custody following a Wednesday morning incident in Williamson County.
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office says around 7:40 a.m., deputies responded to the scene of a hit and run accident in the construction zone near Illinois 148 and Grassy Road. Citizens reporting the incident provided a description of the vehicle, license plate information, and reported the driver to be wearing a “ski mask.”
The suspect vehicle was later discovered to be stolen out of Mounds City.
Responding deputies saw the suspect vehicle going north on Illinois 148 at Illinois 13. The vehicle had significant front-end damage and had a bumper protruding from the vehicle that appeared to be striking other vehicles on the roadway.
Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop and the vehicle fled. The suspect vehicle lost control and collided with a stationary vehicle at Stotlar Road and South 13th Street in Herrin. The suspects got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
Area schools and Herrin Hospital were notified and implemented lock down procedures out of an abundance of caution.
Deputies assisted by Officers from the Herrin, Carterville, and Energy police departments apprehended two juvenile suspects after an initial foot pursuit and search of residential neighborhoods. The juveniles have an extensive history of law enforcement contact.
The scene was secured. There’s no further threat to public safety.
