HARRISBURG – In celebration of Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday, the Shawnee National Forest will host 19 historical paintings by Rudolph (Rudy) Wendelin. On loan from the USDA National Agricultural Library, these replica paintings were completed from 1977 through 1995 and remain the most famous depictions of Smokey Bear.
The Wendelin artwork collection will first be displayed during an open house and birthday party on Monday, Sept. 2, at the Shawnee National Forest’s Headquarters office. The open house will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and all are welcome to attend. The office is located at 50 Hwy. 145 South in Harrisburg.
The Shawnee is one of 14 national forests and grasslands in the nation to host the painting collection during the 2024 birthday celebration event. Bring the whole family to see these historical paintings, partake in fun activities and wish Smokey Bear a happy 80th birthday!
The art collection and other commemorative memorabilia will be on display at the Forest Headquarters office in Harrisburg weekdays from Sept. 3-6 and Sept. 9 -13, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Organized groups are asked to call ahead and contact Vincent Gonzalez at 800-699-6637.
The artwork collection will be on loan and travel to Giant City State Park in Makanda on Sept, 7 and 8, and be displayed at the State Park’s Visitor Center from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. After enjoying the park, stop by the Visitor Center to see this special artwork and catch a special appearance by Smokey Bear.
Painter Rudy Wendelin worked for the U.S. Forest Service as an illustrator beginning in 1933 and was the mastermind behind Smokey’s human-like appearance in his signature ranger hat and blue jeans. Thanks to Wendelin’s art, Smokey’s message “Only YOU can prevent wildfires” has prevailed through the generations.
