CARBONDALE – Since Oct. 9, 2024, City of Carbondale police officers have investigated 14 reports of burglaries to motor vehicles.
The reports came from the 400 blocks of North Beadle Drive and North Robinson Circle, the 600 block of East Campus Drive, the 800 and 900 block of East Grand Avenue, the 900 and 1000 block of East Park Street, and the 1100 and 1200 blocks of East Walnut Street.
The investigation revealed six incidents involved force used to enter the vehicles while nine vehicles were undamaged or were known to have been left unlocked. All of the burglary investigations are ongoing. Anyone with information about the incidents is encouraged to contact the police department at the numbers listed below.
The police department recommends the following tips to reduce the odds of becoming a victim of a burglary to your vehicle:
- Keep your vehicle doors locked at all times.
- Park your vehicle in a locked garage. If a garage is not available, park where there is plenty of light, potential witnesses, or in the view of any security cameras.
- Keep your windows completely closed so the suspect can’t force the window down allowing the suspect to unlock the door or reach items inside.
- Don’t leave valuables in the vehicle when unattended even if the doors are locked.
Many times a person looking to steal a vehicle, or items from inside the vehicles, can be seen walking by vehicles and checking the door handles to see if the door is unlocked. We urge residents and visitors to Carbondale to immediately call the police department if they see this type of activity or any other perceived suspicious activity. Working together, we can help prevent burglaries in Carbondale.
