VERGENNES – The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the person killed in a Sunday night crash on Illinois 13/127, north of Illinois 4, in Vergennes.
It’s 18-year-old Lyric Irby of Peoria.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to the scene around 6:10 p.m.
A preliminary investigation shows three vehicles were going south on Illinois 13/127. They were a gray 2024 Nissan Pathfinder driven by 66-year-old Jerry Ward of Murphysboro, a maroon 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 18-year-old Trevor Turnbull of Rochester and 2016 Honda Accord that Irby was driving.
Irby attempted to pass the other vehicles and was southbound in the northbound lane. Another vehicle, a silver 2010 Ford Edge driven by 71-year-old James Summers of St. Charles, MO, was northbound. Irby’s vehicle and Summers’ vehicle collided head-on on the shoulder of the northbound lane. After coming to rest, the engine compartment of Irby’s car was on fire. Other motorists took action, broke a window with a hammer, and pulled her from the burning car. Unfortunately, Irby succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Summers was extricated from his vehicle and taken to an area hospital.
In their attempts to avoid the crash, Turnbull struck the rear of Ward’s vehicle. This resulted in relatively minor damage. Turnbull, Ward, and Ward’s passengers were not injured. The road was closed for about two-and-a-half hours.
The crash is being investigated by the sheriff’s office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
The Jackson County Ambulance Service, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, the Vergennes Fire Department, and the Murphysboro-Pomona-Somerset Fire Protection District all assisted on the call.
